Q. How do I determine if a remodeling company is right for me?
A. Because home remodeling operations tend to be smaller companies, sometimes just one person and a van, you need to do your homework. A small company is not necessarily a bad company. Your best source of information is word of mouth from those who have had work done by this company before. Ask for references and for the ability to see examples of the contractor’s previous work. A company that can be trusted is one that is not afraid to provide a long list of proud references. It’s up to you, do your homework, check them out. Corker Remodeling is proud to provide a long list of references and wants you to check us out.
Q. What warning signs should I look out for when considering a home remodeling company.
A. * They cut you a discount because they have stuff left over from another job.
* They only take cash.
* The guarantee requires a lawyer to understand it.
* They expect you, the customer, to get the building permits.
* They want total payment up-front.
* They have no business phone number or business address. They only use their cell phone.
* They don’t have you sign a written contract.
Q. What happens if someone from the remodeling company is injured while working at my house?
A. Make sure that your contractor has the appropriate insurance. Just as important, if not more important, make sure any sub-contractors they might hire are equally insured. Have it in writing that the contracting company and any sub-contractors have current insurance certificates. Check it out. Ask to see the certificates before they lift a hammer.
Q. Should I always go with the contractor that provides the lowest job estimate?
A. Not always. The first thing you want to do before making your decision is to get all the estimates in writing. This is one sign of a professional company. It shows they have done this kind of work before. Estimates from different companies, for the same kind of work, should all be fairly close to each other in price. Ask the lowest bidder why their estimate is so much lower then the other estimates.
